Harry's Movie Review

Skyscraper is a film with a simple premise executed cleanly. A framed former FBI agent must navigate a burning supertall building to save his family. I went in expecting standard blockbuster scaffolding and got exactly that, but it is built well enough to hold up. The film does not waste time justifying its own existence.

Johnson plays Will Sawyer with a directness that works. He does not lean on quips or bravado. Instead, he moves through the building with purpose, and when he is scared or uncertain, you see it in his body language before the script makes him say it out loud. Neve Campbell as his wife gets less screen time than the architecture does, but she avoids the trap of becoming just the thing to rescue. The supporting cast fills their roles without overreaching.

Rawson Marshall Thurber keeps the camera moving and the fire moving. At 102 minutes, the pacing never stalls. The one thing that does not quite land is the villain's motivation, which feels thin even by action film standards. It does not derail the film, but you feel the absence of something with actual stakes behind it.

What stayed with me was how the film trusts you to understand danger without constant explanation. When Johnson climbs, you feel the height. When fire spreads, you see the threat. No manipulative music cues needed. That restraint is rare in this genre, and it makes the experience cleaner and more enjoyable.
