Harry's Movie Review

The Protégé is a revenge thriller built on a straightforward premise: trained assassin loses her mentor, hunts down those responsible. Director Martin Campbell brings enough craft to the material that it does not feel like time wasted. The film knows what it is and does not apologize for it. That matters.

Maggie Q does the heavy lifting here. She moves through fight scenes with precision, and more importantly, she does not oversell the emotional beats. When her character processes loss or makes a decision, Q lets the moment breathe instead of pushing for a reaction. Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Keaton round out the cast, though the film belongs to her. She is the one we follow, and she keeps us there.

Martin Campbell handles the direction with efficiency. The pacing moves at a clip that respects your time, and the action sequences are coherent enough to follow without feeling like you are watching a blur of cuts. There is one limitation worth naming: the romantic subplot with Michael Keaton's character feels obligatory rather than earned, and it softens some of the sharper edges the film could have had.

What stays with me is not a memorable twist or a transcendent moment. It is the feeling that I spent two hours in a film that did not condescend to me. It showed up, did its job, and got out. For a revenge thriller, that is enough.
