Harry's Movie Review

Deep Cover sends Kat, an improv teacher reconsidering her life choices, undercover to infiltrate London's criminal underworld alongside two of her students. It's a premise that could go several directions, and director Tom Kingsley mostly keeps it on the lighter side. The film knows what it is: a scrappy heist-adjacent comedy with modest ambitions. That honesty works in its favor.

Howard carries the film with a kind of grounded weariness that keeps things tethered even when the plot gets loose. She doesn't oversell Kat's panic or transformation. You believe she's someone who teaches comedy and suddenly finds herself in actual danger, which is harder to pull off than it sounds. The supporting cast around her feels game and present without needing to do much heavy lifting.

The tone tilts a bit too hard into exaggeration in the second half, though. What starts as believable awkwardness veers toward slapstick in ways that don't always land. At 99 minutes the film moves quickly enough that you don't have time to resent the uneven moments, but they're there. Kingsley keeps things moving, which helps cover the seams.

What lingers is simpler than I expected. It's the feeling of watching someone step sideways into a life that was never meant for them, fumbling through it anyway. The film gets that particular kind of panic right, even when other elements slip sideways.
